Estimating the cost of coastal adaptation using mangrove forests against sea level rise

چکیده
Sea level rise due to climate change poses a serious threat human populations in coastal areas. In planning possible countermeasures, it is important consider the potential economic risks and cost of any proposed adaptation. This paper examines effectiveness adaptation measures that combine mangrove afforestation (green infrastructure) dike construction (gray areas considered be at risk inundation. Based on data for 112 countries regions where forests are present along coastline, global benefit/cost ratio combination dikes approximately 1.5 times higher than dike-only protection. It was found this type multiple protection scheme can reduce number required overall

Sea level rise and South Florida coastal forests
Coastal ecosystems lie at the forefront of sea level rise. We posit that before the onset of actual inundation, sea level rise will influence the species composition of coastal hardwood hammocks and buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus L.) forests of the Everglades National Park based on tolerance to drought and salinity. Precipitation is the major water source in coastal hammocks and is stored in th...
متن کاملModelling Coastal Vulnerability and Adaptation to Sea Level Rise
Coastal regions are highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR) therefore developing and implementing effective adaptation alternatives is crucial for their future development. However, there is uncertainty in the timing, duration, spatial location and extent of SLR and storms. The complexity that arises from climate, coastal systems and their interactions in space and time can easily become over...
متن کاملCoastal mangrove forests mitigated tsunami
A study conducted after the 26th of December 2004 tsunami in 18 coastal hamlets along the south-east coast of India reiterates the importance of coastal mangrove vegetations and location characteristics of human inhabitation to protect lives and wealth from the fury of tsunami. The tsunami caused human death and loss of wealth and these decreased with the area of coastal vegetation, distance an...
متن کاملEstimating coastal recession due to sea level rise: beyond the Bruun rule
Accelerated sea level rise (SLR) in the twenty-first century will result in unprecedented coastal recession, threatening billions of dollars worth of coastal developments and infrastructure. Therefore, we cannot continue to depend on the highly uncertain coastal recession estimates obtained via the simple, deterministic method (Bruun rule) that has been widely used over the last 50 years. Furth...
متن کاملHow mangrove forests adjust to rising sea level.
Mangroves are among the most well described and widely studied wetland communities in the world. The greatest threats to mangrove persistence are deforestation and other anthropogenic disturbances that can compromise habitat stability and resilience to sea-level rise. To persist, mangrove ecosystems must adjust to rising sea level by building vertically or become submerged. Mangroves may direct...
